This character is based on the awesome concept of Blad Moran. Turned out to be quiet a challenge...
For the hairs I use vray material on different maya hair systems. I use different ways to generate curves. 
from zbrush's fibermesh, from polyloop, from paintfx or just the usual way.
For the fur on the face I use vray fur with a density map to exclude the parts I don't want furry.
